At one point along the canal was a series of eight locks in a row.


As boats were coming down, they often pushed water over the lock doors, which would spill into the lower lock.
 


A lockmaster determined the flow rate for a lock to fill by opening up valves. This one was in a hurry to get somewhere, because the water just boiled.
